The ladies from the Afghani Women’s group have been members of WHISE for around 15 years and have enjoyed a wonderful relationship with staff and have treated us to many wonderful meals with their compliments especially at Christmas time.
Last Christmas time was no different from any other, except that the beautiful meal was now served by the Afghani ladies at the new premises at 15 Scott street Dandenong in lieu of in Frankston where WHISE used to reside.
After the ladies treated us to the most extensive and delicious banquet of Afghani treats, Marlene Hoff (Community Kitchens Coordinator for WHISE) casually asked all the ladies if they would be keen to attend a Multi-cultural Community Kitchen and complete a Certificate II in Hospitality (Kitchen Operations). They were thrilled and many of the ladies enrolled there and then on the spot.
The Multi-cultural Community Kitchen began in February at the Uniting Church in High Street Frankston every Friday until the end of July. It comprised not only Afghani ladies but also 3 Chinese ladies and 1 Turkish man - you could say it was our version of “Masterchef around the world”.
Three of the Afghani ladies Laila, Mehro and Shaima had a real passion for starting a catering business specializing in Afghani cusine.
After 6 months of encouragement and achieving their goal of a qualification in Hospitality the ladies have been successful in establishing The Afghani Kitchen .
