WHISE Training

Why Women's Health

Women are different from men; not only biologically but also in their experiences of health. The Why Women's Health workshop aims to have women see their health as broader than the physical aspects or those things that cause illness; to also consider the range of factors which can impact on their overall health status.

Why Women's Health workshops are interactive, group based workshops conducted by a trained WHISE facilitator within a location of the groups choice.

SGP (Settlement Grants Program) Volunteer Training

The SGP run by WHISE (funded by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship) has a unique feature – a team of trained female volunteers who visit newly arrived women at home to assist them with their basic settlement needs. Many of the women who receive visits by volunteers come as refugees and are granted visas on humanitarian grounds. They speak very little or no English and are often overwhelmed by their situation, striving to settle into their new country.

Twice a year WHISE runs a 4 day intensive training course for SGP home visit volunteers. Advertisements for the course are promoted throughout the community/welfare network encompassing agencies, universities & TAFE colleges.

In 2011 two training courses were conducted, with 22 new volunteers trained. Many of these volunteers have, or are currently, visiting a client each week for about an hour, helping them settle into Australia.

WHISE would like to congratulate these wonderful volunteers and thank them for all they have done and are doing, assisting women and their families from many different cultures, making them feel welcome in their new home.
