WHISE values and appreciates the generous contribution made to WHISE activities by its voluntary workers.

The term ‘voluntary worker’ is used to cover:

  • Students on placement from tertiary education institutes
  • Peer educators working in specific programs (e.g. the Respect Protect Connect Program, the CWCC Home Visiting Program, the Community Kitchen)
  • Peer educators working in specific time-limited projects
  • Reception and administrative volunteers (including those on work placement as part of employment preparation programs).

The involvement of voluntary workers may be:

  • short term (e.g. student placements which may vary from one week, to one day per week per term or year)
  • for the length of the project (e.g. in the CALD Men’s Project and CALD Families Project)
  • Ongoing (e.g. in the RPC and CWCC programs, and in administration and reception).

WHISE recognises that:

  • WHISE services, programs and operations are enriched by the contribution of our voluntary workers
  • Encouraging voluntary workers brings WHISE into partnerships with tertiary education providers, employment agencies and other service providers
  • Our voluntary workers often gain considerable experience and knowledge through working with WHISE
  • WHISE is able to further the education and employment prospects of voluntary workers, through provision of tailored experience (where possible), and through acting as referees.

WHISE will continue to actively seek the involvement of voluntary workers in WHISE activities, on a professional basis similar to its recruitment of staff.

WHISE will establish both general and specific selection criteria, for voluntary workers, and will make these known to all applicants and through our general information brochures.

The respective responsibilities in relation to voluntary workers are as follows:

  • The CEO approves the specific areas in which voluntary workers may be appointed and retains overall responsibility for voluntary workers
  • The HR Manager is the principal liaison and point of contact for all tertiary institutions and students seeking placement at WHISE
  • The HR Manager is the principal supervisor on a daily basis for all voluntary workers
  • Staff members are responsible for identifying potential areas in which voluntary workers may be involved, and for mentoring the voluntary workers in specific programs, services or administration
